Lighting Ideas For…

Convenience

In this example, the closet light will turn on when the closet is opened.  The light will stay on for 10 minutes or until the closet door is shut.  This will give the customer the convenience of having the light come on by itself and can help to reduce energy costs if the customer is likely to accidentally leave the light on.

WHENEVER Closet Door (Zn 14) BECOMES NOT SECURE
THEN TURN Closet Light [6 (A6)] ON FOR 10 MINS

WHENEVER Closet Door (Zn 14) BECOMES SECURE
THEN TURN Closet Light [6 (A6)] OFF

Safety
In this example, the stairway lights will turn on for 10 minutes when a motion sensor in the stairway detects motion.  The lights will also turn on when the door to the stairway is opened.  This will ensure that your customer does not end up in a dark stairwell, where it may be easy to have an accidental fall.  This example shows one motion sensor and one door with a door contact.  Use a door contact on each door that leads to the stairway.  Your application may also require more than one motion sensor, depending on the size and shape of the stairway.

WHENEVER Stairway Door (Zn 5) BECOMES NOT SECURE
THEN TURN Stairway Lights [1 (A1)] ON FOR 10 MINS

WHENEVER Stairway Motion (Zn 6) BECOMES NOT SECURE
THEN TURN Stairway Lights [1 (A1)] ON FOR 10 MINS

Security

In this example, lights will be used to give the premises an occupied appearance when the customer is away for an extended period of time.  When the system is armed to vacation mode, the following rules turn on several lights at different times to simulate the normal activities of the resident.  At sunset the living room lights will turn on.

WHENEVER SUNSET
AND Area 1 (Area 1) IS ARMED VACATION
THEN TURN LivingRm Lights [1(A1)] ON

The kitchen lights will turn on at 7:00pm and stay on for 35 minutes.  At 7:30pm the dining room lights will turn on for 25 minutes.  This simulates the resident preparing and eating dinner.

WHENEVER THE TIME IS 7:00 PM
AND Area 1 (Area 1) IS ARMED VACATION
THEN TURN Kitchen Lights [2(A2)] ON FOR 35 MINS

WHENEVER THE TIME IS 7:30 PM
AND Area 1 (Area 1) IS ARMED VACATION
THEN TURN DiningRm Lights [3(A3)] ON FOR 25 MINS

Finally, after sunset the bathroom lights will turn on for 2 minutes every hour and 17 minutes.  The unusual interval and the variance in the time sunset occurs will help to achieve a seemingly random pattern.

WHENEVER EVERY 1 HOUR AND 17 MINUTES
AND Area 1 (Area 1) IS ARMED VACATION
AND THE TIME IS LATER THAN AT SUNSET
THEN TURN Bathroom Light [4(A4)] ON FOR 2 MINS

At 11:00pm (bed time) all lights with Housecode A will be turned off.

WHENEVER TIME IS 11:00 PM
AND Area 1 (Area 1) IS ARMED VACATION
THEN TURN ALL LIGHTS OFF, HOUSECODE A

Create a similar sequence for the morning to create a “lived in” appearance.

To integrate the M1 with lighting controllers that have an RS-232 interface, such as OnQ-ALC, PCS-UPB, Centralite , Vantage, EDT-iLine, etc., use the ELK-M1XSP, Lighting/Thermostat Interface, Serial Port Expander.

ELK RP Tip Of The Week

Modem Connection Methods
Dial, Hang Up, Dial Again

Most local telephone companies provide voice mail services.  If the customer subscribes to this service, the telephone company intercepts unanswered calls and re-routes them to a voice mail system.  This means that the customer’s telephone will stop ringing after four or more rings.  If the security/automation system is programmed to answer on five or more rings, it will never answer! This method is intended primarily to overcome this problem.  It may, however be used to bypass any type of answering machine.

The system must be programmed to enable this feature.  This feature is enabled under Globals in ElkRP or using keypad programming Menu 7.

The dial/hang-up/dial feature allows two ways to connect, hands free or prompted.  When you select prompted, ElkRP dials the customer’s number (on the Account Details screen) and prompts you to disconnect.  Listen for one or two rings and click Hangup Now.  ElkRP will delay a few seconds, them prompt you to re-dial.  Click OK to re-dial.  The hands free method dials the customer’s number, waits a few seconds, hangs up, and dials again automatically.  If dial/hang-up/dial is enabled in the system, it will answer on the first ring of the second dial attempt.
