Elk Training, Week 3 On/Off Switch

At this point, I would usually ask the question “What is an on/off switch?”  Instead, I ask the question “Is there any electronic device in your home without an on/off switch?” Ask the question of the average person and they will tell you “no”. When, in truth, if they have an alarm system the answer is most likely “yes”. Ok, someone will say that the alarm system is not secure if you can shut it down, but isn’t that why you use a lock? Think about the problems it would eliminate . . .

When would you use one?
With the installation of every control panel to eliminate the following problems:

1. To eliminate end user panic when the voltage drops too low for the keypad to accept or recognize a valid code number.

2. To eliminate 2:00am service calls to turn off systems when you get an irate customer screaming, “Which wire do I pull to shut this %^&* thing off?”

3. When you want to be able to instruct an end user how to turn off the system NOW, via the phone. The technician can then choose a time, convenient to him, to make the service call.

4. To eliminate run-a-way systems that drive the central station crazy because of power outages or problem systems.

5. To provide customer service during long power outages. End users can be called and instructed to turn off their systems before the battery goes dead and starts the above problems.

Which one will do the job?
ELK-964B20 Master Power Switch. Bulk pack of 20 pieces
ELK-965 Master Power Switch w/Low Battery Cut Off
. Not only a Master Power Switch, it has low battery cut off, too. This saves batteries from damaging deep discharge. Not to be confused with a security panel’s low battery sensor, which only tells when a battery is bad, this unit actually cuts the battery out of the circuit when it reaches approximately 10 volts. Most controls are not going to be functioning properly at that voltage, anyway, and this saves the battery from a damaging deep discharge. When the AC power is restored, the battery will get recharged to its capacity preventing a costly service call to replace the battery.
