What is a speaker? A device that
broadcasts a sound generated by a separate electronic device; such as a
siren driver, voice driver, or any other type of audio input. A speaker
can play sounds, music, or voice depending on what it is given. It
generates no sound without input. Think of your stereo speakers – they
can play voice, country music, classical music, rock ‘n roll, etc.,
depending on the input they are given.
When would you
use one? When you need to provide voice messages, sounds, or
entertainment with the following type systems: security, access control,
paging, intercom, music & sound, emergency alert, etc.
What types of
interior speakers are available?
Flush mount – once mounted, the bulk of the unit is recessed in the
wall.
Surface mount – mounted to the surface of the wall.
Box Speakers – shelf or stand speakers, generally for hi-fidelity
What does the wattage
rating mean?
Wattage rating is simply the maximum power a device can safely handle
continuously; the higher the rating, the more power the unit can handle.
Wattage rating is also relative to the clarity of the sound
reproduction. If you want voice reproduction, you should select a
speaker rated at no less than 20 Watts. High fidelity speakers
are generally rated at 50 Watts and above. The wattage rating is
usually 10 to 15 Watts on interior, security related speakers.
Esthetics:
Most general purpose interior speakers are plastic with grilles in the
front to allow the sound to exit. The plastic generally “yellows” with
age and prohibits paint adhesion. Painting over the grille could also
block the sound portal, diminishing the effectiveness of the speaker.
What makes Elk
interior speakers different? The wattage rating on Elk
interior speakers is 20 Watts, providing better voice clarity for
voice messages and longer service life with siren drivers. They are not
recommended for hi-fidelity applications, but general voice messaging &
sound reproduction are very good. Along with the traditional “grille”
speakers, Elk offers a premiere line of speakers known as the “Echo
series”. Our “Echo series” is reverse engineered so the grille is in the
rear of the speaker and utilizes the wall as part of the sound chamber,
actually providing a better sound. The plastic is porous to allow paint
adhesion and the grille is unseen, meaning they can be painted or
wall-papered to match the décor of the room. They seem to
“disappear” into their surroundings. All units are surface mounted so
they require less installation time.
