Direct Connections

Direct connections are made through a serial (COM) port on your computer. ElkRP supports COM1 through COM128. With a data rate of 115,200 baud, direct connections are fast. Every feature of ElkRP is available during a direct connection. There are no limitations.

If your computer has a USB port, you may be able to use it with a USB to RS-232 converter if you configure the USB port to emulate a COM port. Elk Products cannot guarantee the operation of USB ports, however, because of the wide variety of models and drivers available. The ELK-USB232 is a USB to RS-232 converter that has been tested with our systems.

Connect one end of a serial RS-232 cable to your computer’s COM port and connect the other end to the RS-232 connector on the system’s main unit. Click the Setup menu, choose Communications, and select the serial port you connected the cable to from the list.

To connect directly to a system, open the account you are connecting to and click the Direct option in the Connection menu.
