When ElkRP detects the call is answered, it emits a series of tones. If an answering machine answered the call first, the system’s main unit listens in on the call for the tones. When it detects them, it seizes the line, disconnecting the answering machine.
For answering machine bypass to work, the main unit must be wired to enable line seizure using an RJ-31 jack or similar wiring as allowed by local codes. If you are not familiar with RJ-31 wiring, contact Elk Products Technical Support.
Answering machine bypass is applicable only to modem connections made using the Fully Automatic and Prompt When System Answers methods.
In the event the customer subscribes to a voice mail service provided by their local telephone office, the telephone company may intercept and re-route the call after four or more rings. If this happens, the methods just described will not work. To overcome this problem, use the Dial, hang up, and dial again method.
