Hi,
My M1XEP which had been working fine for many years, suddenly went to a state that I can’t connect to it. Debugging it further, I found that its MAC address has changed to 00:40:9D:43:35:97. IP address has gone to static IP (192.168.3.64: which is outside of the subnet that I use). Also it appears that its firmware has gone back to something really old. The upgrade utility provided by elk is also not useful as it that is complaining about firmware too old.
At this point, I have not network connectivity to elk and I can’t control it remotely. Can somebody help me to revive it.
Thanks.

Power down the M1XEP and install a jumper onto JP2 of the M1XEP. Power up with the jumper ON and watch the Green Network LED which after ~20 seconds should start flashing either one blink per second or two blinks per second. If one blink per second then remove the JP2 jumper but if two blinks per second power back down and back up. After the second power cycle the Green LED should be blinking one blink per second at which time remove the JP2 Jumper and let the M1XEP reboot. The reboot will take approximately 60 seconds and the Green LED should be flashing randomly with data traffic. Use ElkRP2 to try and Find the M1XEP on the LAN or use the M1XEP Special 2.0.34 Updater Utility to see if the utility can find your M1XEP . https://www.elkproducts.com/elkdoc/special-m1xep-2-0-34-updater-utility/
October 9, 2024 at 12:28 pm #8445PRAFULL SINGHALThanks Brad. The process above seems like a way to change from static ip to dynamic IP. What I did was that I changed the ip address of a computer in the same subnet as the default ip address (192.168.3.64). After that I’m able to ping m1xep however I can’t connect to it using ElkRP2. ElkRP2 detects the M1xep but connection fails all the time on both secure port and unsecure port. I tried the utility you mentioned above, it also detects the m1xep but says it can’t upgrade as the firmware on the device is too old.
What should be the next steps?
Thanks
October 30, 2025 at 8:25 am #9638JASON CURTISSMy M1EXP just encountered this same issue. MAC address changed and went to default IP address. Thankfully steps above resolved. What’s causing the MAC address to change?
November 3, 2025 at 8:11 am #9654JASON CURTISSStopped communicating again this morning. Unable to discover in ELKRP or update utility. M1XEP is one blink per second. Performed the steps above and remains at one blink per second.
What should be the next steps?

Without the JP2 jumper on the M1XEP the Green LED is blinking a steady one blink — correct? If so the M1XEP is damaged and should be replaced.
November 4, 2025 at 10:05 am #9660JASON CURTISSYes, steady blink for LED on Digi Connect ME and M1XEP board without jumper. Can I purchase the Digi Connect ME module separate? Issue appears with this module versus the board.
