With a data rate of 2,400 baud, however, modem connections are much slower than direct connections or network connections. Neither the main unit’s firmware (nor the firmware of any of its peripherals) may be updated through a modem connection.
Install the modem according to the instructions that came with it. Click the Setup menu, choose Communications, and select the modem from the list. You can customize the modem’s configuration by clicking the Configure button. However, it should not be necessary to do so because most modems will work with the default configuration. If changes are made, the settings you change are effective only for ElkRP. This prevents custom ElkRP settings from affecting how the modem operates for other applications. When you start ElkRP, the modem’s existing settings are temporarily saved and the custom settings are enabled. When you exit ElkRP, the saved settings are restored.
Another unique feature of ElkRP is that it automatically bypasses answering machines. When calling an account, if an answering machine, fax machine, or any other device answers before the main unit, the system will seize the incoming telephone line, removing the device, and connect to ElkRP. This feature requires that the system be installed to allow line seizure, usually through an RJ-31 telephone jack. Some of your customers may have voice mail services provided by the local telephone company. If so, the telephone company central office may intercept the call after four or more rings and route the call internally to voice mail. If this happens, ElkRP cannot connect to the system! To overcome this problem, ElkRP provides a connection method called “Dial, hang up, dial again.” Click below for more information on this feature.
There are six ways to connect using a modem (click on any of these for more information):
Modem Connections: Fully Automatic
Modem Connections: Prompt When System Answers
Modem Connections: Dial, Hang Up, And Dial Again
Modem Connections: Customer Will Force System To Answer
Modem Connections: Telephone Connection Already Established
Modem Connections: Local Connection Via House Telephone Line
Two additional methods allow ElkRP to answer incoming calls from a system:
