Connects to a system through your computer’s modem and a telephone line. The word(s) immediately following “Dial Using” is(are) the name of the modem you selected for modem connections in the Setup menu.
There are six methods of dialing and connecting through a modem. Which one you choose depends on such factors as whether the system will auto-answer, whether someone is available near the system to cause it to answer, or whether you are already talking to the customer on the telephone. A brief summary of each method is below. For additional information on each one, click on them in the “See also” section below.
To connect to a system through your modem, make sure the modem and all its associated drivers are installed and that it is connected to an available telephone line. The telephone line should be dedicated to the modem to prevent disruption of the connection by other telephones, modems, faxes, etc. Open the account you are connecting to, select this sub-menu, then select one of the six methods available.
Fully Automatic
ElkRP calls the system without any intervention and will automatically handle an answering machine if it answers before the system does. This method requires no human assistance on the system’s side.
Prompt When System Answers
ElkRP calls the system with the modem’s speaker turned on. When you hear the system answer, click OK to continue connecting. If an answering machine answers the call, simply listen for the out-going message to end before clicking OK. ElkRP will bypass the answering machine automatically at that point. This method requires no human assistance on the system’s side.
Dial, Hang Up, And Dial Again
Use this method to bypass telephone company voice mail answering systems. ElkRP calls the system with the modem’s speaker turned on. Depending on whether you chose the “hands free” or “prompting” method, ElkRP will either automatically dial the system or prompt you to hang up and redial. The system will detect one or two rings, then silence, then will answer on the next ring. This method requires no human assistance on the system’s side.
Customer Will Force System To Answer
ElkRP calls the system and someone with access to the system is responsible for making it answer. The person near the system must be expecting the call. When the telephone rings, the person uses the keypad to force the system to answer the call. Refer to the system’s instruction manual to see how this is done. This method requires human assistance on the system’s side. An advantage of using this method is the increased security of requiring someone be on-site to initiate the connection.
Telephone Connection Already Established
This method assumes a voice connection has already been established. The person near the system must be using a telephone that is physically on the same line as the system. It must be wired to allow telephone line seizure. You must likewise be using a telephone on the same line as the modem (i.e. the telephone is plugged into the modem’s phone jack). Tell the person to force the system on-line (refer to the system’s instruction manual). At the same time, select this sub-menu and method. This method requires human assistance on the system’s side. An advantage of using this method is the increased security of requiring someone be on-site to initiate the connection.
Local Connection Via House Telephone Line
Use this method to connect locally to the system. Plug the modem into any available telephone jack. The location must already have working telephone service, and the system must be wired to allow telephone line seizure. Select this sub-menu and method. This method requires no human assistance on the system’s side. An advantage of using this method is it allows for a local connection when direct connections are not feasible.
