Database security helps protect you company against someone copying your Accounts Database in an attempt to take over your customer accounts.
This feature is useful if you enable Multi-operator Access and restrict what your employees can do in ElkRP. If someone copies both the Accounts and Operators Databases, the culprit will be limited to whatever restrictions you placed on them. Therefore, as a general rule, you should give less restricted access only to those employees you completely trust. Even then, it may be wise to restrict all employees from seeing the RP Access Code.
Without Database Security, someone could copy your Accounts Database to their own computer. They could install ElkRP and give themselves unrestricted access to all information in your database. To prevent this, you can password protect your database. The password is stored in both the Accounts Database and the Operators Database. Should someone copy both of them, they will be limited by the restrictions you placed on them. If you restricted them from viewing the RP Access Code and Installer Programming Code, they will not be able to see them – even on the copy.
The databases are also protected against tampering. ElkRP can detect that a database was tampered with in an effort to defeat this protection. In that case, ElkRP will require you to enter the Database Password to open the Accounts Database.
To protect your accounts, click “Setup,” then “Options.” Select the “Database Security” tab. Enter a unique password in the Password box. When you enter a password, it is encrypted and stored in the Operators Database and the Accounts Database. The two must match before ElkRP will allow them to be opened.
Should you lose or forget the password, and later re-install ElkRP or copy your database to another machine, you will not be able to open the Accounts Database without this password. You should write down the password and keep it in a safe, secure location.
If you do forget your password, Elk Products can reset it for you. Of course, anyone can pose as you and ask us to reset the password on a copy of your database. To prevent this, you must enter your name, company name, address, and phone number on this screen. This data is encrypted and stored in the database. If Elk Products is ever asked to reset the password, we will contact you using the information provided here to confirm the request.
No built-in protection is 100% secure. The only way you can be sure your accounts will not be stolen is to physically secure the computer hosting ElkRP and to monitor employee activity.
